International Sex Workers Rights Day was created 2001, when over 25,000 sex workers gathered in India on this day for a festival, despite public outcry and the removal of their permit.
The 2001 event was organized by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee. Since this day, sex workers have marked this anniversary as an international event. Non-profits and other groups use it to educate workers about their rights and provide information to help them deal with a variety of issues that go hand and hand with the industry.
